As part of a five-year study, the researchers discovered new potential disease-influencing genes in 419 Texas families with confirmed IS diagnosis. The two additional genes are CHL1 and DSCAM, which play a role in the neurologic and spinal systems. The findings will allow the medical community to form a new hypothesis explaining the cause of scoliosis and serve as a tool for further research, according to the release.
