Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Gary Steinberg of Stanford University Medical Center

Gary Steinberg, MD, is chair of the Stanford University School of Medicine neurosurgery department in Palo Alto, Calif. He's board-certified in neurosurgery and neurological surgery, and his clinical focuses are cerebrovascular and spinal vascular surgery, intracranial aneurysms, neurosurgery and carotid endarterectomy.   Dr. Steinberg is also a professor of neurosurgery and the neurosciences and director of the Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences.

Since his appointment as department chair in 1996, Dr. Steinberg has worked to expand Stanford's clinical research programs. The university now includes centers for stroke, brain tumors, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, epilepsy, functional neurosurgery, head and spine trauma, pediatric neurosurgery and pituitary tumors

He has a strong background in stem cell biology and participated in the Geron Corp trails at Stanford treating patients with spinal cord injury using the company's stem cell technology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Steinberg has researched the use of stem cells in models of neurological injury or illness and received $20 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to study how neural stem cells could be used to treat patients with ischemic stroke.

Dr. Steinberg earned his medical degree and completed an internship at Stanford University School of Medicine. He also did his residency at SUMC and a served a fellowship at the Institute of Neurology England.
