Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Scott Blumenthal of the Texas Back Institute

Scott Blumenthal, MD, is a spine surgeon and partner at the Texas Back Institute in Plano. He co-directs the Center for Disc Replacement at TBI. He specializes in artificial disk replacement and was one of the first surgeons to perform lumbar disc replacement in the United States. Additionally, he served as a principle investigator for the SP III Charite Artificial Disc and has served as chairman of the education committee of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery. He's also a member of the International Society of the Study of the Lumbar Spine and the North American Spine Society and certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

"My goal as a spine surgeon is to get my patients back to life using the most advanced motion-preserving technologies," Dr. Blumenthal said on TBI's website. "This includes lumbar and cervical artificial discs as well as posterior dynamic stabilization and interspinous process distraction."

Dr. Blumenthal earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University Medical School in Evanston, Ill., and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas. He later finished a spinal trauma fellowship at the Midwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury Care System at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
