Spine Leaders

Christopher M. Bono, MD, is an orthopedic and spine surgeon and chief of spine service at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He's also an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Massachusetts General Hospital-Brigham and Women's Hospital Spine Fellowship. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bono is an adjunct researcher at the Spine Research Center of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati.

Dr. Bono specializes in cervical spinal stenosis, cervical disc herniations, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar disc herniations, spondylolisthesis and spine fractures.

Dr. Bono is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Spinal Injury Association, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, North American Spine Society and the Spine Arthroplasty Society. He has served as chair of the Professional Economic and Regulatory Committee of NASS and has expertise working with reimbursement for spinal fusions.

"It's going to be a constant battle for the next five to 10 years," says Dr. Bono. "I think there are some procedures and products that will go away, and they probably should. Other products, such as bone morphogenic proteins, will be used in a much more reserved fashion for fewer cases. However, if the surgeon feels it should be used, they will need to fight for it regardless of the initial coverage decision."

Additionally, Dr. Bono serves on the Board of Directors of the North American Spine Society. He's also deputy editor of The Spine Journal and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

He graduated from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and was an orthopedic surgery resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School. He completed a spine surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Diego.
