Gunnar Andersson, MD, a spine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush is the Ronald L. DeWald, MD, Chair in Spinal Deformities at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Andersson has co-authored or authored more than 250 academic papers and more than 150 books and book chapters related to back pain and back injuries. He has been a spine surgeon researcher and educator for more than three decades.

Dr. Andersson's research interests include intervertebral disc biology, biomechanics and epidemiology of back pain.

"When I trained, we didn't have CT scans, we ddin't have MRI scans — we didn't have a lot of the technical products we have today that allow us to replace joints, difficult fractures and spine problems," Dr. Andersson said in a video. "There's been a tremendous evolution and it's been fun to be a part of the evolution. It has been very gratifying because we can now help so many more patients than we used to be able to help."

He came to Chicago in 1976 as a visiting professor and returned a decade later to make it his home. Before settling in Chicago, Dr. Andersson was a medical student and later a resident orthopaedic surgeon at Sahlgren Hospital at the University of Goteborg in Sweden. He helped design the seat in Volvo automobiles.

Dr. Andersson also completed a fellowship in orthopedics from The London Hospital.
