Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Howard An of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush

Howard An, MD, is a spine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush and director of the spine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Since 1997, Dr. An has held the inaugural Morton International Endowed Chair position at Rush University Medical Center. Additionally, he is an associate editor of the spine section of The American Journal of Orthopedics. He has a special interest in cervical spine surgery, scoliosis surgery, microsurgery and minimally invasive spine surgery, as well as spinal instrumentation. Dr. An's research interests include tissue engineering of the intervertebral disc and spinal biomechanics.

Dr. An stresses the importance of discussing non-surgical options with patients to help put them at ease, as well as treating every patient as if they are family.

"My philosophy of patient care is first of all to treat every patient with respect," Dr. An says. "This means listening to their medical history very carefully and coming up with treatment recommendations that have the best possible outcomes."

Dr. An is a member of several professional societies, including the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society, American Spinal Injury Association and Scoliosis Research Society. He has a medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at that same medical college. Later, Dr. An completed a spine surgery fellowship at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
