Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Stephen Onesti of South Nassau Communities Hospital

Dr. Stephen Onesti is a spine surgeon leaderStephen T. Onesti, MD, was recently named director of neurosurgery for South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y. He is a board certified neurosurgeon with a special interest in spine surgery. Previously, Dr. Onesti chaired the department of neurosurgery at SUNY Downstate Health Science Center in Brooklyn. He has a professional interest in all types of spinal disorders including disc herniation, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, pinched nerves and patients who have chronic pain. "I enjoy talking to patients, I enjoy listening to their stories and trying to figure out what is wrong," Dr. Onesti said on his website. "Every patient presents a somewhat different and unique puzzle that needs to be figured out to try to determine the cause of the problem."

Throughout his career, Dr. Onesti has participated in clinical research and published many articles in peer-review journals. He is the co-editor of a book on degenerative disc disease of the cervical spine. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Onesti is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Onesti also spent two years as president of the New York State Neurosurgical Society. He has also been selected as a top doctor by Castle Connolly for the New York Metro Area.

Dr. Onesti earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Boston and completed his residency in neurosurgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center/Neurological Institute of New York.
