The American Pain Foundation opposes a New Mexico bill introduced by Senator Bernadette Sanchez that would mandate new procedures and restrictions related to the prescribing of opioid medications for the treatment of pain, according to the foundation's website.
The organization is asking that the bill be postponed until next year's legislative session to "give all interested parties — both those representing concerns about substance abuse and those representing the undertreatment of pain — time to come together to develop a consensus about what policy changes will address the abuse/overdose problem while simultaneously not impeding access to good care for the many more individuals affected by pain."
