HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has announced a proposed rule for certification requirements for electronic health record technology, to be effective in 2014.
With the rule, the ONC proposes that hospitals and eligible professionals would be required to own certified EHR technology only for the objectives they use to demonstrate meaningful use under the Medicare or Medicaid HER incentive program.
The proposed rule also includes the following:
• Changes to certification criteria for EHRs sold by vendors or self-developed by healthcare providers;
• New patient safety criteria for certification;
• Request for comments on ways to improve data portability;
• Request for opinions on whether to require technology developers to disclose the full cost of certified EHR technology.
